Form Study

These improv workshops focus on specific improv forms or formats. Basically, they are best for improvisers with some experience under their belt and familiarity with two person scene work, group scenes, and some experience performing.

Hover your mouse over or tap the images below to learn more about class lengths and sizes.

Usual Suspects

The Usual Suspects is a format developed at Spectacles Improv Engine. Players line up and play a series of back-to-back two person scenes punctuated by ensemble pieces. Characters are usually not repeated, but connections and callbacks are encouraged. Beginner friendly, the format can be mined for riches by experienced improvisers.

Length: Two 3-hour sessions

Students: Up to 12

Suitable for improvisers with basic improv experience (e.g., Level 1)

Intro to JTS Brown

This philosophy of play that forms the foundation of the JTS Brown is simple—whatever happens is the perfect thing to have happened—but this style is anything but simple to master. JTS demands total physical, mental, and spiritual commitment combined with trust in your teammates and the magic of improv.

Length: Six 3-hour sessions (full course) or two 6-hour sessions (intensive).

Students: Minimum of 10, up to 16

Suitable for improvisers that are comfortable and experienced with long-form improv.

My Philosophy

My philosophy is based around the idea of the Genuine Improviser—what I consider my platonic ideal performer. Being a Genuine Improviser is less about how you perform but how you approach performing. The behaviors below describe the Genuine Improviser I hope to create with my teaching style. You can learn more about my philosophy over on my blog.

Trust and Responsibility The Genuine Improviser trusts their scene partners implicitly. They take full responsibility for their scenes and assume others are doing the same.
Confident Humility The Genuine Improviser attacks the stage confidently while remaining humble. We can never let the audience know we’re afraid, even if we are.
Hardcore Listening The Genuine Improviser pays attention to details without getting obsessed. They identify what is the most useful and make it important.
Passion The Genuine Improviser cares about this art form, their fellow performers, and their audience.
Balance Too much logic leads to talking heads and low stakes. Too much emotion leads to unreal behaviors. The Genuine Improviser strikes a balance between these.
The Hyper-real World The Genuine Improviser creates a real sense of time and place by committing to the imagined reality.

Student Guidelines

You must be 18 to register. Since workshops have limited class sizes, please ensure you can make every session when you sign up (and please be on time).

My 3-hour workshops are $30-$50 per student. Multiple-session workshops are around $30-35 per session (a six week class is ~$200 depending on the material).

All students and faculty (that’s me) are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. You will be required to present proof of vaccination on the first day of class. There are no exceptions to this rule other than those required by law.

Students are encouraged but not required to wear masks when they are not actively performing, eating, or drinking.

If you need to use an alternative payment method please contact me via email at genuineimprov@gmail.com. If you need a discount on classes for literally any reason, fill out this form. Finances shouldn’t get in the way of you learning improv.
